restructuring of public health schemes and catering to the nutritional needs of the
people. The approach paper to the 12th five year plan (2012 to 2017) is also estimated
to focus on the recast of existing public health schemes for achieving better results.
The working group constituted for the plan comprises officials from the Health
Ministry representatives of business chambers and Planning Commission Members.
At a recent meeting of the working group, it was unanimously agreed that there was a
huge dearth of doctors in the public health sector, and the doctors trained through
expensive private education route would never willingly go in for primary health care
needs. Therefore, a massive expansion of medical education was essential to improve
primary health care and to make it affordable for the masses.
Stress was also laid on addressing the nutritional needs of the people. Mr.

the fact that nutrition was an integral part of health and it needed to be addressed
urgently . Mr. Sen has spent a large part of his life treating malaria among tribal in
Chattisgarh. According to him, the body mass index of an average tribal individual
was below 18.5. This proved that the food grain distribution per family was not
adequate and it needed to be supplemented with pulses and oil for a complete diet.

is spoken by a lover who loved his lady over a long period of time and who after
making him wait for so long. Finally rejected him, and turned to another person. The
lover then prayed to her to accept two requests of his. First that she should remember
his love for her and secondly that she should come with him for a last ride together.
To his great joy the lady consented.
The entire poem is a dramatic monologue. The lover is expressing his
emotions actually in front of none. He seems to be talking to himself in loneliness. He
analyzes his own courting and persuasion of his beloved and its ultimate result. But
instead of getting disheartened over his miserable failure he finds a consolation in the
consent of his lady love for going on a last ride with him. The sheer imagination of
proximity fills him with thrill and sense of fulfillment.
d) The essay "Umbrella Morals" is a satire on the modern culture where people have lost
their moral conscience. They do not care for others trouble they do wrong knowingly
they play hid and seek with their own conscience. The author give many instances he
says that such type of people take other umbrellas made of silk and leave their own

4) The fourth friend was Samuel, known as 'the pea' on account of his size. There was
nothing outstanding about him. he was just ordinary, no outstanding virtue of muscle
or intellect . He was as bad in arithmatic as Swaminathan was. he was as
apprehensive, weak and nervous about things as Swaminathan was. The bond
between them was laughter. They were able to see together the same absurdities and
incongruities in things hot water and medicine, preparation for ushering a new person
into the world- were too bewildering for Swaminathan's comprehension.

to do something. He went away returned with a small bottle in his hand he
hovered about uncertainly. The hushed voices hurry seriousness agitation, and
business like. No one had seen smile on Shankar's face. Rajam came to the
school on time, not uttering a dozen words to anybody. Mani looked worried.
(iii) As the geography teacher was on leave, the boys of first "A" were in leisure.
Swami missed his friends and felt lonely. He wandered along the corridor of
the infant standards. He saw the infants dabbling in wet clay and trying to
shape models for Swami it was ridiculous things to do at school.
Ans. 8(i) The Silver box was given the title 'The cigarette box by Galworthy both
essentially mean the same thing an expensive cigarette case. It is the central
thing in the plot. The entire story revolves round it Jones, an out of work poor
man is tempted one night to take it away from wealthy Jack's house. Mr.
Barthwick first points his accusing finger at this char woman Mrs. Jones. She
discovered it by chance at her house, she insists on returning it to its owner.
There is a fight Jones wants to throw it into the river. At this crucial moment a
detective Mr. Snow enters the room the stolen box he draws Mrs. Jones on
charge of thief to the police station. Jones attack the policeman on duty. He too
is arrested both are produced in the court. The dishonest, magistrate the
constable and lawyer Roper Shield Jack Jones is convicted assaulting A public
servant on duty but not on the charge of stealing.
Hence the cigarette box events all conflicts & suffering arise from it. The word
silver gives to the title the colour of a class struggle between the rich and poor.
It is the symbol or rich.
(ii) Jones Galsworthy, the noble prize winner in his drama ' The Silver Box' took up
specific social grievances such as the double standard of justice as applied to the
upper and jower classes. He believed that since the prevailing social structure was
maintained through laws, these laws should be operative for all, rich and poor alike.
"The Silver Box' may be regarded as a problem play, a social tragedy. The
victims are poor Jones, his wife, Mrs. Jones and children. The other side wealthy
liberal, Mr. Barthwick himself is law. Galsworthy indicts the established institution of
law courts which is held in highest esteem for its fairness. The ground reality is that
the scales of justice are tilted in favour of men of position and wealth. Jack Barthwick
and Jones are equally wicked. Both are equally guilty of misconduct, moral
degradation and stealing. But law treats them differently. Jack is shielded by his
father. His offence of stealing is ignored and magistrate acquits him. But poor Jones
who pleads his case himself, is silenced and sent to prison. In the end Jones expressed
his anger "Call this Justice" What about im, 'E got drunk ! 'E took the purse - 'e took
the purse but it's is money got 'im off- JUSTICE !"
Ans.9(i) Unknown lady came to meet Mr. Jack Barthwick but he was having a severe
headache and she had to tell to Jonh Barthwick why she wanted to meet Jack.
She explained him how in liquor, he snatched her reticule containing all her

lights on Jack's real character. She reveals that Jack is a drunkard and

(iii) When Mrs. Jones detects the stolen purse, she thinks to return it. When she
shakes out Jones, coat, the silver box falls down from the coat pocket. She is
shocked to see it . She wants to take it back and tell them all about it. But
Jones snatches it from her hands with a promise that he would throw it away
into the river along with the purse. Meanwhile a detective, snow appointed by
Mr. Barthwick enters Jones house. Snot detects the letters J.B. carried on it
and he is sure that it is Barthwick's.

1. INTROCUTION
Some says, "Stars make our fate". But to speak truth, it is our own thinking

profession. A good profession can make our life a pleasant sport. On the other hand a
bad one may turn our life into a long disease. So it we want happiness we must think
how to choose a profession.
2. FIRST RULE FOR CHOOSING A GOOD PROFESSION
The best profession is that where we can serve best. It is mistake to choose a
profession which can pay more without having capacity for it. If we have no ability
we cannot serve well, if we do not serve well, our services may be terminated. So
those who only aim at gold, become rolling stones. But those who aim at service
permanently make rise and become happy.
3. SECOND GOLDEN PRINCIPAL
Another important thing which we should keep in mind is that we should not
choose a profession against our taste. A man cannot serve with his whole heart, if he
done not like his work. Working without interest soon makes us inefficient and lazy.
Our laziness is danger to our progress. So parents and religious should not crush the
taste and ambition of our young men.
4. THIRD IMPORTANT CONDITION OF CHOICE
We should also not forget, 'Honesty is the best policy ?" Dishonest professions
are thorn to social life. Good men prefer death to making gambling or black
marketing their profession. Money is never greater than man. We should never give
God's throne to gold.
5. WHAT PROFESSION DO I LIKE
I like the honest profession of teaching. My ability and taste are fit for it. It
gives me much pain that educational institutions are but degree making factories. So it
is the dream of my life to make students not mere bookworms but true nation builders
and servants of humanity.
6 CONCLUSION
Man is maker of his destiny. It depends on him to choose either luxury and be
kicked or served and be elevated. Rightly says Lord Rama, "Luxury is sweet at first
but poison in the end while service which is bitter at first is a road to salvation and all

The various five year plans have, from time to time, laid emphasis on the
restructuring of public health schemes and catering to the nutritional needs of the
people. The approach paper to the 12th five year plan (2012 to 2017) is also estimated
to focus on the recast of existing public health schemes for achieving better results.
The working group constituted for the plan comprises officials from the Health
Ministry representatives of business chambers and Planning Commission Members.
At a recent meeting of the working group, it was unanimously agreed that there was a
huge dearth of doctors in the public health sector, and the doctors trained through
expensive private education route would never willingly go in for primary health care
needs. Therefore, a massive expansion of medical education was essential to improve
primary health care and to make it affordable for the masses.
Stress was also laid on addressing the nutritional needs of the people. Mr.
Binayak Sen and Ms. Syeda Hameed, two prime members of the working group, said
the fact that nutrition was an integral part of health and it needed to be addressed
urgently . Mr. Sen has spent a large part of his life treating malaria among tribal in
Chattisgarh. According to him, the body mass index of an average tribal individual
was below 18.5. This proved that the food grain distribution per family was not
adequate and it needed to be supplemented with pulses and oil for a complete diet.

c) 'The last ride together' is a dramatic monologue and it show drowning at his best in
the handling of this poetic form. It has also been called a dramatic lyric because it is
not an expression of his own personal emotions, but that of an imagined character. It
is spoken by a lover who loved his lady over a long period of time and who after
making him wait for so long. Finally rejected him, and turned to another person. The
lover then prayed to her to accept two requests of his. First that she should remember
his love for her and secondly that she should come with him for a last ride together.
To his great joy the lady consented.
The entire poem is a dramatic monologue. The lover is expressing his
emotions actually in front of none. He seems to be talking to himself in loneliness. He
analyzes his own courting and persuasion of his beloved and its ultimate result. But
instead of getting disheartened over his miserable failure he finds a consolation in the
consent of his lady love for going on a last ride with him. The sheer imagination of
proximity fills him with thrill and sense of fulfillment.
d) The essay "Umbrella Morals" is a satire on the modern culture where people have lost
their moral conscience. They do not care for others trouble they do wrong knowingly
they play hid and seek with their own conscience. The author give many instances he
says that such type of people take other umbrellas made of silk and leave their own
cotton umbrellas in exchange. They are not to be found out by others. Quite
impeccable people who ordinarily seem unspotted from the world are afflicted with
umbrella morals. These people would never put their hands in another pocket, or
forge a check or rob a till not even if they had the chance.

(i) Swami honored only four person with his confidence. He admired them most in his
class.
1) The first was Somu, the monitor, who carried himself with such an easy air. He set
about his business, whatever it was with absolute confidence and calmness. He was

2) The second was Mani, the mighty good for nothing. He toward above all the other
body of the class. He seldom brought any book to the class. No teacher ever tried to

was a child's play to him. His face was radiant with intelligence. Swaminathan looked
on him as a marvel.
4) The fourth friend was Samuel, known as 'the pea' on account of his size. There was
nothing outstanding about him. he was just ordinary, no outstanding virtue of muscle
or intellect . He was as bad in arithmatic as Swaminathan was. he was as
apprehensive, weak and nervous about things as Swaminathan was. The bond
between them was laughter. They were able to see together the same absurdities and
incongruities in things hot water and medicine, preparation for ushering a new person
into the world- were too bewildering for Swaminathan's comprehension.

discussing how they answered the question. At the last question of moral one
of them had written a full page, Rajam had written only three quarter of a page
while Shankar had written a little more than half. As Swami only a line, he felt

about half a page.
(ii) At school everybody seemed 'to be overwhelmed by the thought of the

Swami mother gave birth to a baby boy. One day his Granny said to

night when he woke up he saw a lady doctor in the hall. She behared as it the
house belonged to her. She entered mother's room, a mingled noise was
coming out of that room. Then she came out and commanded Swami's father
to do something. He went away returned with a small bottle in his hand he
hovered about uncertainly. The hushed voices hurry seriousness agitation, and
business like. No one had seen smile on Shankar's face. Rajam came to the
school on time, not uttering a dozen words to anybody. Mani looked worried.
(iii) As the geography teacher was on leave, the boys of first "A" were in leisure.
Swami missed his friends and felt lonely. He wandered along the corridor of
the infant standards. He saw the infants dabbling in wet clay and trying to
shape models for Swami it was ridiculous things to do at school.
Ans. 8(i) The Silver box was given the title 'The cigarette box by Galworthy both
essentially mean the same thing an expensive cigarette case. It is the central
thing in the plot. The entire story revolves round it Jones, an out of work poor
man is tempted one night to take it away from wealthy Jack's house. Mr.
Barthwick first points his accusing finger at this char woman Mrs. Jones. She
discovered it by chance at her house, she insists on returning it to its owner.
There is a fight Jones wants to throw it into the river. At this crucial moment a
detective Mr. Snow enters the room the stolen box he draws Mrs. Jones on
charge of thief to the police station. Jones attack the policeman on duty. He too
is arrested both are produced in the court. The dishonest, magistrate the
constable and lawyer Roper Shield Jack Jones is convicted assaulting A public
servant on duty but not on the charge of stealing.
Hence the cigarette box events all conflicts & suffering arise from it. The word
silver gives to the title the colour of a class struggle between the rich and poor.
It is the symbol or rich.
(ii) Jones Galsworthy, the noble prize winner in his drama ' The Silver Box' took up
specific social grievances such as the double standard of justice as applied to the
upper and jower classes. He believed that since the prevailing social structure was
maintained through laws, these laws should be operative for all, rich and poor alike.
"The Silver Box' may be regarded as a problem play, a social tragedy. The
victims are poor Jones, his wife, Mrs. Jones and children. The other side wealthy
liberal, Mr. Barthwick himself is law. Galsworthy indicts the established institution of
law courts which is held in highest esteem for its fairness. The ground reality is that
the scales of justice are tilted in favour of men of position and wealth. Jack Barthwick
and Jones are equally wicked. Both are equally guilty of misconduct, moral
degradation and stealing. But law treats them differently. Jack is shielded by his
father. His offence of stealing is ignored and magistrate acquits him. But poor Jones
who pleads his case himself, is silenced and sent to prison. In the end Jones expressed
his anger "Call this Justice" What about im, 'E got drunk ! 'E took the purse - 'e took
the purse but it's is money got 'im off- JUSTICE !"
Ans.9(i) Unknown lady came to meet Mr. Jack Barthwick but he was having a severe
headache and she had to tell to Jonh Barthwick why she wanted to meet Jack.
She explained him how in liquor, he snatched her reticule containing all her
money.
The visit of the unknown lady serves a useful dramatic purpose. It throws
lights on Jack's real character. She reveals that Jack is a drunkard and
associated with prostitutes. Lady's visit helped the dramatist to construct the
plot.
(iii) When Mrs. Jones detects the stolen purse, she thinks to return it. When she
shakes out Jones, coat, the silver box falls down from the coat pocket. She is
shocked to see it . She wants to take it back and tell them all about it. But
Jones snatches it from her hands with a promise that he would throw it away
into the river along with the purse. Meanwhile a detective, snow appointed by
Mr. Barthwick enters Jones house. Snot detects the letters J.B. carried on it
and he is sure that it is Barthwick's.

profession. A good profession can make our life a pleasant sport. On the other hand a
bad one may turn our life into a long disease. So it we want happiness we must think
how to choose a profession.
2. FIRST RULE FOR CHOOSING A GOOD PROFESSION
The best profession is that where we can serve best. It is mistake to choose a
profession which can pay more without having capacity for it. If we have no ability
we cannot serve well, if we do not serve well, our services may be terminated. So
those who only aim at gold, become rolling stones. But those who aim at service
permanently make rise and become happy.
3. SECOND GOLDEN PRINCIPAL
Another important thing which we should keep in mind is that we should not
choose a profession against our taste. A man cannot serve with his whole heart, if he
done not like his work. Working without interest soon makes us inefficient and lazy.
Our laziness is danger to our progress. So parents and religious should not crush the
taste and ambition of our young men.
4. THIRD IMPORTANT CONDITION OF CHOICE
We should also not forget, 'Honesty is the best policy ?" Dishonest professions
are thorn to social life. Good men prefer death to making gambling or black
marketing their profession. Money is never greater than man. We should never give
God's throne to gold.
5. WHAT PROFESSION DO I LIKE
I like the honest profession of teaching. My ability and taste are fit for it. It
gives me much pain that educational institutions are but degree making factories. So it
is the dream of my life to make students not mere bookworms but true nation builders
and servants of humanity.
6 CONCLUSION
Man is maker of his destiny. It depends on him to choose either luxury and be
kicked or served and be elevated. Rightly says Lord Rama, "Luxury is sweet at first
but poison in the end while service which is bitter at first is a road to salvation and all
blessings."

Tips for the students attending SLC examinations
Students are required to write correct answers with appropriate layout and format to secure good marks. Answers with attractive handwriting, design and layout will be extra advantage for the candidates. It has been found out that the students, despite writing the correct answers, have not got marks as much as they deserve. There are various factors affecting the marking like: layout design, organization of the answers, handwriting etc. This section simply give some tips for the students so that they will get better marks in the SLC examination. These tips are equally important to the teachers as well. The teachers need to instruct their students accordingly.
Some of the mistakes that the students make regarding layout and design of the answers in the SLC examination, found during re-totaling procedure and other research activities, are listed below:
1. Writing answers inside the cover page. The cover page is torn during coding and thus the answers on that page are left unmarked.
2. Misinterpreting the ‘Rewrite’ instruction. Some candidates write the questions first as they are in the test paper and then they repeat the same sentence while answering.
e.g. I saw ……….. ewe yesterday. (a/an/the)
Ans: I saw a ewe yesterday.
Answers written in such way could be overlooked; consequently the candidates may lose the marks.
3. Writing the answers of different questions with not enough space in between them.
4. Writing news stories, stories and essays without heading/ title.
5. Writing/copying unnecessary lines particularly in short answer questions of reading comprehension questions.
6. Rewriting the text of question number nine i.e. grammar type 2 with the correct alternative but left not underlined. Answers to this type should be distinctly seen.
7. Some students are found to have done the matching exercise by drawing lines and not writing the words with their meanings in the same line.
